Mark Carney is a Canadian economist, former central banker, and politician who became Canada’s 24th Prime Minister in March 2025. His career combines international finance, monetary policy, climate finance, and political leadership, making him one of the most prominent Canadian public figures of his generation.
Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Carney studied economics at Harvard University before completing master’s and doctoral degrees in economics at the University of Oxford. He initially pursued a career in international finance before moving into Canadian public service.
Carney served as Governor of the Bank of Canada during the global financial crisis and became Governor of the Bank of England in 2013. In that position, he helped oversee the British financial system during a period that included the Brexit referendum and the economic uncertainty that followed. He later served as the United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance.
After entering federal politics, Carney became leader of the Liberal Party and was sworn in as Prime Minister in 2025. His leadership has emphasized economic growth, Canadian sovereignty, investment, employment, and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.
